What is a no-pull harness?

A no-pull harness is a harness that is specifically designed for dogs that pull on a leash.  They are a great tool because they softly discourage pulling without the strain on your GSD’s neck like a regular collar.

Of course, no tool is a substitute for proper training and no leash or harness can teach your dog how to walk properly.

Teaching your dog not to pull on walks is the best solution, but a no pull harnesses can help you keep your sanity (and keep you from being dragged down the street) while your dog is still learning.

How can a no-pull harness help with walking a German Shepherd?

A no-pull harness helps with walking a GSD because the soft pulling discouragement it provides encourages proper leash walking habits.  Additionally, it helps protect your dog’s neck by taking the pressure off its neck when it pulls and applying it evenly across their chest.

A no-pull harness can also help give you better control during your walks, making the walks more enjoyable for both you and your dog.

How to measure your German Shepherd dog for a harness?

In order to purchase the correct sized harness for your dog, you need to take 3 basic measurements.  You will need a soft tape measure and a place to write down the measurements if you can’t remember them.

First, you should measure your dog while he/she is in a standing position. The tape measure shouldn’t be too tight or too loose.  You should be able to put two fingers under the tape measure just like under a normal collar.

The 3 measurements needed are as follows:

  1. Neck

Place the measuring tape around your dog’s neck right where its throat meets its chest.

  1. Girth

The girth measurement is the most important for determining the size of the harness. Wrap the tape around your dog’s body, about two inches behind its front legs.

  1. Chest width

The measuring tape should be placed across the chest, an inch below the base of the neck, from one shoulder bone to the other.

Most dogs will adjust to the right harness in no time but finding quality pet products can be challenging.

To help, I made this list of four great no pull dog harnesses for German Shepherds.

This heavy-duty harness is made from breathable, soft material with plenty of padding making it very comfortable for your German Shepherd.  It is an over the head harness which makes it easier to take on and off your dog than the step-in harnesses.

There is a handle on the back of the harness that will give you more control over your GSD whenever you need it.  The only problem with the handle is that there is no padding on it, so it might be a little harsh on your palms.

One of the greatest features of the Rabbitgoo dog harness is the two metal attachment points – back and front.  The one on the back is supposed to be used when you take your dog for a run or a hike, and the front attachment is designed for walking.  When the leash is attached to the front, the moment your dog starts pulling, the leash turns your dog towards you making it impossible for him/her to keep pulling.

Another important feature is the reflective straps that will keep your dog visible to traffic and other people when it’s dark.

Lastly, the price is very reasonable for the quality.

What I love:

  • Multi-functional: back and front leash attachment points
  • Easy on/off
  • Comfortable
  • Adjustable
  • Extra durable
  • Highly reflective
  • Handle for extra control
  • Multiple colors

Possible downsides:

  • Handle thinner than most and has no padding
  • Plastic rings

And the verdict is…

Safety always comes first, so if your dog is the master of escape, the Rabbitgoo dog harness is a must have. Additionally, the front attachment point is a game-changer when walking a dog that likes to pull.

The EXPAWLORER Big Dog Soft Reflective No Pull Harness

The Expawlorer harness is specifically made for big dogs.  It’s made from a soft, durable material that dries fast if it gets wet.

The straps on this harness can tighten or loosen for a perfect fit. On the padded back it has a heavy-duty metal D-ring and a sturdy rubber handle, perfect for a quick grab if necessary.

The long reflective strap on the back will make your GSD visible and safe during nighttime walks.

The only problem some people have with this harness is the plastic clips on the straps because dogs seem to find them perfect for chewing.  This can be prevented by putting on the harness only when it’s time for a walk.

What I love:

  • Really bright reflective strap
  • Very comfortable extra handle
  • Metal D-ring
  • Comfortable
  • Easily adjustable
  • Extra durable
  • Multiple colors
  • Made specifically for large dogs

Possible downsides:

  • Doesn’t have padding on the chest
  • Dogs may try to chew the plastic clips and tear apart the straps

And the verdict is…

There is no better harness if your dog loves getting dirty during walks because it dries extra fast. Also great for nighttime walks because of the wide reflective strap.

PetLove Dog Harness

The PetLove dog harness is extra comfortable as it consists of a lightweight mesh lining with soft sponge padding on the chest and back.  The material is durable and scratch resistant, has adjustable straps for a custom fit and a reflective material.

This harness is extremely easy to put on and take off, and it has a handle on the back to give you better control.  One complaint is that the harness seems to run a little larger than what the sizing chart suggests.

This harness has some bright color choices if you want your dog to be stylish and stand out.

Another major plus is the 3-month warranty that comes with this harness.

What I love:

  • Extra comfort for your dog
  • Lightweight
  • Adjustable
  • Reflective material for visibility
  • Bright colors to choose from
  • Extra easy to take on and off
  • Additional handle for control
  • 3-month warranty

Possible downsides:

  • The handle has no padding and might hurt your palms
  • Harness seems to run larger than the size chart

And the verdict is…

If you go through a battle every time you have to take a harness on or off your GSD, the PetLove dog harness will make your life easier.  Plus, with a 3-month warranty you can’t go wrong!

Friends Forever No Pull Dog Harness Large Breed

This is another harness made particularly for large breeds!  The product is made of a soft padding, has adjustable thick straps, is lightweight, and is designed to prevent chafing.  It also has a metal D-ring attachment for a leash.

The Friends Forever no pull dog harness also features a 3M reflective material, making your German Shepherd more visible in the dark.   Additionally, it has a sturdy handle for more control.

Some people have had a problem with their dogs chewing the straps and breaking the plastic clips.  I don’t recommend leaving this or any harness on your dog when not using for walking.

This no pull harness has a 12-month no questions asked warranty, so you have absolutely nothing to lose by trying this product.

What I love:

  • Easily adjustable
  • Lightweight
  • Prevents chafing
  • Comfortable
  • Reflective material for visibility
  • Sturdy handle for an easy grab
  • Metal D-ring
  • 12-month: No Questions Asked warranty

Possible downsides:

  • Dog can chew and break the straps and plastic clips if left unattended
  • Plastic parts and strap may wear down over time

And the verdict is…

The extra thick straps help prevent the harness from cutting and/or chafing your dog.  This is a comfortable harness made especially with large dogs like German Shepherds in mind.  The 12-month warranty doesn’t hurt either.

Best Harness for a German Shepherd puppy?

What if you have a puppy and are looking for a no pull harness?  I think the best harness for a German Shepherd puppy is the Rabbitgoo dog harness.

The Rabbitgoo dog harness has a reliable sizing chart and has smaller size options that would fit a young GSD pup.

Well there you have it!  If you are looking for a no pull harness for your German Shepherd, you can’t go wrong with any of the four options above.

Remember that a no pull harness is not a substitute for training your dog to walk nicely on leash, the earlier you start training the better.
