9 Indestructible Dog Toys for German Shepherds

As a German Shepherd owner, I learned very quickly that Allie could destroy a dog toy in less than 30 seconds. Even as a 10-pound puppy, she was lethal! I tried cute, plush dog toys – she tore the limbs off. I tried tennis balls – she destroyed them. I poured a lot of money down the drain before I realized regular dog toys just weren’t going to cut it.

Thus, the search for indestructible dog toys began.

Spoiler alert – there’s no such thing as indestructible dog toys for German Shepherds! BUT not all hope is lost. There are some tough toy options out there that your dog won’t destroy in mere minutes.

But before we get into my recommendations, let’s dig into what exactly you should look for in a good chew toy for your power chewing German Shepherd.

What Makes a Good Dog Chew Toy?

Safety is the number one consideration when choosing a new chew toy for your furry friend. There are several factors that make a dog chew toy safe, including the material and size of the toy.

  • Material

For aggressive chewers, hard rubber chew toys are the best. While any dog toy has the possibility of being destroyed, toys made from high-quality rubber are the best option for long-lasting durability.

There are some quality rope toys and even plush toys that are relatively long-lasting but use these with caution – they should not be considered true chew toys.

  • Size

Size is an obvious safety concern because your dog may choke on smaller toys – or even swallow them whole!

But size also determines the survival rate of a chew toy. If you choose a toy that is too small, your dog will be more likely to destroy it in a matter of minutes because the smaller size gives your dog more leverage when chomping down.

And one other safety rule to keep in mind – never leave your dog unattended with a new toy, no matter how indestructible it seems to be!

Now, let’s jump into my top picks for dog toys that I’ve found to be the most indestructible. All these toys are parent-tested and Allie-approved!

The KONG Extreme

The KONG brand is known for its toughness, and this toy is probably as close to indestructible as you’ll get. In fact, Allie still has some of the same KONG toys from when she was a puppy!

The KONG Extreme is made from ultra-durable rubber and designed especially for extreme chewers. Plus, it bounces! What dog doesn’t love a toy that bounces?

Another reason I love this toy is because it can double as a tasty treat. Because it’s hollow on the inside, you can fill it with peanut butter or other KONG treats – Allie loves a frozen KONG stuffed with peanut butter! And it’s a great way to keep her entertained.

You can also use it for crate training your German Shepherd puppy and during teething.

What I love:

  • Durable
  • Bouncy
  • Doubles as a stuffed treat
  • Different size options
  • Great for crate training and teething

Possible downsides:

  • No dog toy is 100% indestructible – not even the KONG Extreme.

And the verdict is…

The KONG Extreme should be in EVERY German Shepherd owner’s toy basket! It tops mine and Allie’s list of indestructible dog toys for German Shepherds.

The KONG Jumbler Football Toy

Another rough and tough toy from KONG makes the list. Allie loves this KONG football toy because it squeaks – she loves anything that makes noise!

The problem with most squeaky toys is that the squeaker breaks after a few uses. But Allie has had her KONG football for over a year, and it’s as squeaky as ever!

The KONG Jumbler Football Toy comes in a large/x-large size, perfect for German Shepherds. It’s super tough (of course) and has a tumbling tennis ball inside that dogs really love.

It’s important to note that this toy is NOT designed to be a chew toy. Yes, it’s tough – but because of its design, the handles may not survive power chewers.

What I love:

  • Durable
  • Squeaky
  • Bouncy
  • Interior tennis ball for extra excitement

Possible downsides:

  • It’s a heavy toy, so I wouldn’t recommend throwing it in the air for your dog to catch.
  • Also, this toy is really loud and squeaky. Dogs love it… humans maybe not so much.

And the verdict is…

If constant squeaking drives you bananas, then don’t get this toy. But if your German Shepherd loves all things squeaky, this is a great choice!

The TufToys Tug Toy

Every German Shepherd loves a playful game of tug of war, but rope toys don’t hold up for long. This tug toy is designed to be virtually indestructible.

Made from ThermoPlastic Rubber, this 14” TufToys dog toy is ultra-tough yet flexible for tugging and playtime. It also floats so you can use it as a fetch toy in the water. Plus, the nodules and ripples help keep your dog’s teeth clean.

Allie has had many tug toys over the years, and this one has lasted while the others were retired to the trash can.

Do you have two (or more) dogs at home? Since this toy has handles on both ends, plus a ring in the middle, everyone can join in for playtime.

What I love:

  • Durable
  • Handles for interactive playtime (with a pet parent or a furry sibling!)
  • Floaty for water games
  • Great for teething as a pup and keeping teeth clean as an adult

Possible downsides:

  • Once your dog takes hold, it may not let go!

And the verdict is…

Get one! This is really the only tug toy I’ve found that stands the test of time. And the test of Allie!

The JW Pet Megalast Ball

This toy just looks like fun, doesn’t it!? Aside from its bright colors and fun geometric design, the Megalast Ball from JW Pet Company is the best (virtually) indestructible option I’ve found, and the large size is ideal for a German Shepherd.

Allie loves playing with a ball but finding one strong enough to withstand her jaws has always been a challenge. She really loves playing fetch with her Megalast ball, and we have had this ball for almost 3 years.

And it floats, too! So it’s great for pool or bath time.

If your German Shepherd is still a puppy, you can still purchase the large size – just roll it around on the floor and have your pup chase it down.

What I love:

  • Durable
  • 100% recyclable
  • Infused with vanilla
  • Floaty for water games
  • Doubles as a stuffed treat

Possible downsides:

  • Because it’s relatively heavy, it’s also not very bouncy.

And the verdict is…

As advertised, the Megalast ball truly is mega strong and mega fun!

The JW Pet HOL-ee Roller X Extreme

Yes, another JW Pet ball! Like I mentioned, Allie LOVES to play ball, and since we had such great luck with the Megalast ball, I decided to purchase the HOL-ee Roller about 7 months ago. So far, it’s held up great.

The JW Pet HOL-ee Roller ball has an open design with lots of holes, making it a bit different from a normal ball. It’s great for tug of war because you have a way to hold on! Allie also loves all those holes because she can grab on and sling it around.

Try stuffing this ball with all sorts of goodies and let your dog work to get them out. It can actually help boost your dog’s problem-solving skills, while also being a great way to stay busy.

And of course, the X Extreme version of this toy is supposedly made to be extra durable. It’s all-natural rubber without any seams, which makes it really hard to tear apart.

What I love:

  • Durable
  • Bouncy
  • Doubles as a stuffed treat
  • Great for interactive play

Possible downsides:

  • Not all the reviews are great on this one. Some people claim this ball just isn’t all that durable.

And the verdict is…

So far, I’m really impressed with this toy! As I said, Allie has only had it for about 7 months, but 7 months with a German Shepherd is phenomenal in my book!

The West Paw Zogoflex Air Boz

Ok, one last ball toy. And this one is a BOUNCY one! If you have a German Shepherd that likes to leap into the air and catch a ball, this is the perfect choice.

The West Paw Zogoflex Air Boz is super easy to catch in flight because it’s got a little “squish” to it. It’s also light and super bouncy, yet very durable.

Even though Allie gets really wild with this toy (because it bounces so high!), it has still lasted a long time.

And when the Boz ball gets a little too slobbery, you can simply pop it in the dishwasher.

What I love:

  • Durable
  • Bouncy
  • Dishwasher safe
  • Easy to catch in flight
  • Squishy
  • Floaty for water games

Possible downsides:

  • Be prepared for wild, insane bounciness, which may not be so bad – unless you’re indoors.

And the verdict is…

This one is definitely a favorite. Grab this ball and head out for some high-flying fun with your German Shepherd. Allie gives the Air Boz two paws up!

The West Paw Zogoflex Hurley Dog Bone

Every dog needs a bone, and the West Paw Zogoflex Hurley bone is a great indestructible dog toy for German Shepherds that love to chew.

This bone chew toy is designed to be durable for heavy-duty gnawing. In fact, the manufacturer offers a 100% guarantee that it is indestructible!

It comes in several neon colors and is dishwasher safe for easy cleaning. And if your dog is a chewer and a swimmer, it also floats.

The Zogoflex Hurley bone has been in Allie’s toy basket for years and is still intact!

What I love:

  • Durable
  • 100% recyclable
  • Dishwasher safe
  • Floaty for water games
  • Different size options
  • Great for crate training and teething

Possible downsides:

  • Allie wishes it squeaked!

And the verdict is…

Throw your dog a bone. But not just any bone – the Zogoflex Hurley dog bone.

The Tuffy Mega Dog Toy

Ok, this isn’t an indestructible dog toy. But every toy on the list so far has been hard and rubbery, and sometimes your dog just wants a nice, soft toy to play with!

Tuffy Mega toys boast mega construction, with up to 7 rows of stitching and heavy-duty material. Then, they add a protective layer of webbing to cover the seams.

This toy also encourages interactive play and is great for your German Shepherd at any age – seniors included! The soft design won’t hurt gums or teeth.

And as a doggy bonus, this Tuffy toy has multiple squeakers!

To my surprise Allie has actually had one of these for almost two years, most of the squeakers work and there is only one tiny hole in the side.

It’s important to note that this is NOT a chew toy, and your dog should only play with this toy under supervision.

What I love:

  • Durable (for a soft toy)
  • Floaty for water games
  • Squeaky
  • Washable
  • Great for interactive play
  • Easy on gums and teeth

Possible downsides:

  • This toy will probably eventually be destroyed – stuffing, squeakers, and all.
  • An energetic puppy set on destruction may destroy this toy quicker than an older dog.

And the verdict is…

There just aren’t many dog toy options out there that are both soft and durable. While the Tuffy Mega Toy may not be indestructible, it is definitely long-lasting.

The Goughnuts Rubber Chew Ring

The Goughnuts Rubber Chew Ring claims to be virtually indestructible – and they just may be right. Based on my experience (along with hundreds of consumer reviews), this dog toy is one tough cookie.

Because of this toy’s ring shape, there are virtually no weak points, so it can withstand months (or even years) of aggressive chewing.

One of the really cool features of the Goughnuts ring is the idea of “red means stop”. The inside of this ring is red, so if your dog chews through to the red layer, you know to immediately take the toy away. Nifty!

This is another chew toy that is an excellent choice for crate training your German Shepherd puppy and for use during teething.

What I love:

  • Durable
  • Really, really durable
  • Bouncy
  • Different size options
  • Great for crate training and teething

Possible downsides:

  • If given a basketful of toys to choose from, Allie’s first choice probably won’t be her Goughnuts ring – most likely because it doesn’t squeak.

And the verdict is…

When it comes to durability, I’ve saved the best for last – this toy is perhaps the toughest dog toy around. If you’re looking for indestructible, buy a Goughnuts ring!
